Mary Eliza Angela Lewis Conrad (1813-1839) was one of Martha Washington's great-granddaughters and daughter of Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis and Lawrence Lewis. Her family nicknames were "Ped" and "Tiffin." The earliest few letters of these letters are to other family members and friends. But the bulk of the collection was written in 1834 and 1835 to her fiance Charles Magill Conrad. On the majority of those, her mother added lengthy postscripts to Charles that sometimes eclipse the original letter in length. The letters detail her social life, family news, reading, and notes on scenery or significant weather events.
