General Washington had over 40 nieces and nephews. A number of them died in infancy or childhood, but for the ones who lived into adulthood their uncle - as the real pater familias - became mentor, supporter, guardian, and sometimes employer. This collection contains letters written by several nephews: Fielding Lewis (1751-1803), George Lewis (1757-1821), Lawrence Lewis (1767-1839), Howell Lewis (1771-1822), Thornton Augustine Washington (approximately 1758-1787), George Steptoe Washington (1771-1809), Lawrence Augustine Washington (1774-1824), Corbin Washington (1764-1799), George Augustine Washington (1763-1793), Samuel Washington (approximately 1765-1832), and William Augustine Washington (1757-1810). [The number of manuscripts by nephews Bushrod Washington (1762-1829) and Robert Lewis (1769-1829), and niece Harriot Washington (1776-1822) was large enough to warrant a separate collection for each of those three.] Researchers should search our library catalog for yet other manuscripts by these men.
