About this collection

These are letters written by Elizabeth Willing Powel (1743-1830), a woman involved in the social and political maneuverings of the era especially in her position as hostess and as wife of the mayor of Philadelphia. A close personal friend of the Washington family, Powel continued her correspondence with the younger generations after the passing of General and Mrs. Washington.
